Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Kumasi; School of Graduate Studies and the Brew Hammond Energy Centre, College of Engineering

About the Award: The Brew Hammond Energy Centre, College of Engineering, KNUST has received funding from the ‘Hybrid Waste to Energy as a Sustainable Solution for Ghana’ project to train postgraduate students in any of the following thematic areas: Optimization of anaerobic digestion of municipal solid waste and Pyrolysis of waste. This project is funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and research (BMBF), aimed at developing tailor-made solutions to tackle the problem of waste management as well as power management in Ghana.

Applications are hereby invited from suitably qualified candidates for admission into the following limited funding MPhil degree programmes at the Department of Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering, Department of Chemical Engineering and Department of Chemistry.

  1. MPhil Agro-Environmental Engineering
  2. MPhil Bioengineering
  3. MPhil Chemical Engineering
  4. MPhil Chemistry

Type: Masters

Eligibility:

  • Bachelor’s degree with First or Second Class (Upper Division), preferably in Agricultural & Biosystems / Bioresources Engineering, Chemical Engineering and Chemistry, or related programmes.
  • Applicants must not be more than 40 years by 1st August, 2020.

Value of Award: The funding is expected to cover Tuition Fees, Accommodation and Research Grant. Payment of stipend is not part of this scholarship.

  1. Purchase e-Voucher for GHc250.00 at the following banks: GCB, CBG or ECOBANK or dial *447*160# on any network and follow the prompts.
  2. Upon payment of the application fee, candidates will receive an e-Voucher containing an application number and PIN that will grant access to the online admissions portal.
  3. Candidates should then proceed to online admissions website: (Here!) and begin the application process.
  4. Once the process has been completed, candidates MUST PRINT OUT 2 COPIES of the completed application form from the portal and submit them (by post) to the School of Graduate Studies together with:
  • Two passport sized photographs
  • Detailed CV and two letters of reference
  • Official transcripts and certificates of BSc degree
  • A letter of motivation (max. 2 pages) with the heading outlining why you want to study, what makes you well-suited to study in your chosen specialisation, current occupation, how the programme will fit into your professional vision, how your Ghana stands to benefit after your training.
  • A short concept note (max. 3 pages) outlining the justification, objectives, methodology and expected outcomes of a research idea.

Pan African University Scholarships: Masters & PHD

The Pan African University Scholarships is an initiative of the Heads of State and Government of the African Union. It is a Premier continental university network whose mission is to provide quality postgraduate education geared towards the achievement of a prosperous, integrated and peaceful Africa.

Young, qualified, talented and enterprising applicants from African countries and the African Diaspora are invited to apply to join Masters or PhD degree programmes at any of the following four PAU institutes listed below. Young Professional Development Program at OPEC Fund for International Development

Young Professional Development Program

The OPEC Fund’s Young Professional Development Program (YPDP) is a structured two-year program designed to prepare young professionals from the OPEC Fund’s member countries for a career in global development.

We are currently seeking applicants with a passion for and commitment to international development who demonstrate academic excellence and relevant professional experience.

We especially want to hear from those with the drive and ambition to help developing countries address their most pressing challenges in the quest for social, environmental and economic progress.

What does the YPDP offer?

In short, the YPDP offers training, coaching and mentoring, the opportunity to experience different departments and access to professional networks. The program equips young professionals with the skills and knowledge to meet the minimum requirements for an entry-level position with the OPEC Fund.

The YPDP will enable young professionals to develop an appreciation of how different departments / units contribute to the OPEC Fund’s overall strategic and operational goals. Under the structured talent management program, participants will have the opportunity to contribute to achieving the OPEC Fund’s vision of a world where sustainable development is a reality for all.

YPDP participants spend at least 50 percent of the program in a ‘home’ departement / unit and rotate to other departements for the remainde of their time. This enables participants to broaden their experience and benefit from differing coaching and mentoring styles, while building their professional network.

After participants have successfully completed the two-year program, they may be offered a job at the OPEC Fund, based on their performance and the business need.

Eligibility

To be selected for the YPDP program, applicants must:

  • be an OPEC Fund member country national;
  • be 30 years of age, or younger;
  • hold a Master’s degree;
  • be able to demonstrate outstanding academic credentials;
  • be fluent in English and proficient in at least one other language;
  • specialize in development, engineering, economics, finance, business administration, law, information technology, human resources or any other discipline relevant to the OPEC Fund’s operations;
  • be able to work in an international, multicultural and diverse environment;
  • understand the OPEC Fund’s mandate; and
  • be willing to work with the OPEC Fund in Vienna for a minimum of two years upon completion of the YPDP, if offered a position.

The deadline for applications is September 21, 2020. Successful applicants are chosen following a rigorous selection process. Those offered a place on the YPDP are expected to respond within two weeks.

The OPEC Fund works in cooperation with developing country partners and the international donor community to stimulate economic growth and alleviate poverty in all disadvantaged regions of the world.

It does this by providing financing to build essential infrastructure, strengthen social services and promote productivity, competitiveness and trade.

The OPEC Fund’s work is people-centered, focusing on projects that meet basic needs – such as food, energy, infrastructure, employment (particularly relating to MSMEs), clean water and sanitation, healthcare and education.

In fewer than 1,000 words, please write an original essay addressing
(i) the potential of development actors such as the OPEC Fund to help developing countries overcome obstacles to social, environmental and economic progress, and
(ii) about how you would hope to contribute to development if you were selected to work for the OPEC Fund.

You may focus on a region or set of countries and / or your area of expertise to formulate your essay.

Please remember, the OPEC Fund will only consider applications from candidates who meet the above criteria and submit an official online application before the deadline of September 21, 2020.

Solving Global Crises Requires Young Global Citizens | Deadline for Applications: 28 July

Pandemic. Climate crisis. The need for young global citizens has never been greater. They are driving the changes urgently required to address and solve our shared challenges.

This annual AFS Prize will recognize one extraordinary young person for their commitment to improving the global community with a US$10,000 cash prize, participation at the AFS Global Conference, international recognition and membership in the AFS community of young and active global citizens.

Applications for the 2020 AFS Prize for Young Global Citizens are welcome until 28 July 2020.

Who can win this prize?

The AFS Prize for Young Global Citizens will recognize one young person for their commitment to improving the global community and whose actions contribute to a more just, peaceful, and tolerant world.

The Prize will be awarded to an individual who:

  • Is no older than 30 years old by October 22, 2020.
  • Is in charge of a project that is currently running or has been completed between January 2018 and January 2020. Both must have already demonstrated success in achieving their stated goals.
  • Demonstrates how their project is successfully addressing a pressing global issue, tackling one or more of the challenges outlined by the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, and what this translates into in real-life impacts.
  • Shows how their project successfully engages others outside their own community/culture and how this aspect is crucial to advancing their work. Projects must rely on intercultural understanding and global competence.
  • Articulates how their initiative has significant potential to be scaled up and extended.#

2019 AFS Prize for Young Global Citizens Winner

Luisa Fernanda Romero Munoz, co-founder of Get Up And Go Colombia, won the first-ever AFS Prize for Young Global Citizens in 2019 for advancing peacebuilding in her home country by converting former Colombian armed conflict zones into cultural tourism destinations.

This work directly addresses UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) #8: Decent Work and Economic Growth and SDG #1: No Poverty.

Get Up And Go Colombia has impacted more than 20,000 people by helping residents develop transferable employment skills by learning English and working as tour guides, and supporting local businesses.

Get Up and Go Columbia partners with government agencies reintegrating former combatants and providing support services for victims of the armed conflict.

Candidates who fit the criteria can apply for the 2020 AFS Prize for Young Global Citizens by filling in the application form and submitting it before the deadline. Only one application (focused on one project) per person will be considered.
