ABOUT BSF

Founded in 2007 by the French historian Patrick Weil, Bibliothèques Sans Frontières (Libraries Without Borders) is an NGO that empowers vulnerable populations by sharing culture, education and information. It implements inclusive and innovative projects in 30+ countries, enabling people affected by crises and precarity to educate themselves, dream and (re)build their lives. Thanks to its innovative tools, library of contents and expertise in mediation, BSF and its partners tackle the major challenges of the 21st century such as education, culture, citizenship, community building, health, employment or entrepreneurship.

CONTEXT OF THE MISSION

As part of its Horizon 2030 development strategy, BSF is building a regional response in West Africa. A regional office in Dakar, Senegal, was inaugurated in 2022 and BSF’s operations in the region are expanding. BSF is currently implementing projects in Senegal, Côte d’Ivoire, Niger and Burkina Faso and is launching operations in Nigeria.

A first ambitious programme to combat sexual violence in conflicts in Nigeria is currently being launched with the support of the Crisis Centre of the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

In this context, BSF is looking for a dynamic field facilitator based in Maiduguri who will be the person on the ground to help our partners roll out activities within our offline digital libraries.

POSITION WITHIN THE ORGANISATION

The coaches will be placed under the hierarchical responsibility of the project manager based in Maiduguri.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

The field facilitator’s mission will be to:

  1. Actively participate in the implementation of activities in conjunction with operational partners and final beneficiaries in the selected municipalities (initial training, support for mediation and the implementation of activities, additional training).
  2. Facilitate ownership of the Ideas cubes by implementing partners, beneficiaries and other stakeholders.
  3. Contribute to the planning, monitoring, evaluation and visibility of project activities.

More specifically, it will involve:

Carry out the implementation of activities :

  • Contribute to the enrichment of the diagnosis of needs (particularly in terms of content in local languages and the skills of the facilitators), to the continuous training and the development of the skills of the facilitators of the centers where the digital libraries will be deployed.
  • Facilitate the arrival of the Ideas Cubes in the field in conjunction with the administrative, financial and logistical management officer.
  • Facilitate the mobilization and engagement of target audiences through the organization and facilitation of on-site awareness sessions.
  • Contribute to the initial training in the use of the project tools (Ideas Cubes and Kajou cards) in close collaboration with the project manager.
  • Provide training and continuous support in the use of the Ideas Cubes, and mediation with their physical equipment (tablets, computers, dictaphone, overhead projector, camera, etc.) and digital equipment (Ideas Cube server: library of digital resources accessible without the internet: videos, podcasts, articles, etc.).
  • Ensure the technical maintenance and updating of the content of the Ideas Cubes in conjunction with the project advisor and the project manager.

Carry out Monitoring, Evaluation and Communication:

  • Ensure the collection of usage data according to the monitoring and evaluation system developed by the Project Manager (frequency of use, percentage of M/F, number of activities created, etc.) and any other data necessary for the evaluation of the impact of the project.
  • Facilitate and support project monitoring missions.
  • Produce weekly/monthly reports and provide the necessary information on the implementation of activities.
  • Participate in the implementation of the communication plan.
  • Ensuring visibility through success stories, impact stories…

The field facilitator may be required to perform any other task that may be entrusted to him/her by his hierarchical superior (Project Manager) in his/her field of competence.

QUALITIES AND QUALIFICATIONS

Requirements:

  • At least 2 years of experience in community animation, mediation, training within an association, an NGO, a community or any other actor in local development.
  • Significant professional experience in projects around gender-based violence.
  • Experience with internally displaced persons, especially women and girls would be a plus.

Training :

  • Bachelor’s degree in social sciences, education, economics, or any other equivalent degree.

Expected skills:

  • Knowledge of the context of Borno State.
  • Knowledge of session facilitation on digital technology, psycho-social support, education, entrepreneurship, culture.
  • Mastery of facilitation techniques, awareness and group training.
  • Ability to adapt one’s coaching approach to contextual needs.
  • Excellent command of English, read, written and spoken and at least one local language including Kanuri, Hausa, or Shuwa Arabic.
  • Excellent writing and interpersonal skills.
  • Knowledge and use of computer tools (Word and Excel at least).
  • Knowledge of the methodology and tools of monitoring and evaluation.

Interpersonal skills:

  • Sense of rigor, organization, autonomy, natural ease in communication.
  • Adaptability and pragmatism.
  • Adherence to BSF’s values.

RECRUITMENT CONDITIONS

  • Type of contract: Full-time fixed-term contract, Nigerian law contract. Contract only for national staff.
  • Start of contract: January 2025
  • Contract Duration: 4 months (renewable based on funding opportunities and performance).
  • Duty Station: Maiduguri with possible mobility to other communes in Borno State depending on the security situation.
