Senior Drill and Blast Engineer Summary

To provide timely and professional technical support to the drill and blast related works. The role will provide technical support including the drill and blast planning, design, scheduling, modelling, fragmentation analysis, process improvement, reconciliation, and reporting.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

Ensure that Drill & Blast operations comply with the company’s policy on health, safety and environment.
All planning, design and scheduling of drilling and blasting, utilizing tools of blast design software.
Review and approve the Drill & Blast design prepared by Mining Contractor, and produce Drill & Blast designs as required, as defined by the monthly quarterly and weekly plans.
Monitor and react to control the fragmentation, continuous optimization of the powder factor.
Rig drilling, availability and utilization blasting performance modelling, in-situ performance assessment and adjustment according to the rock type, structures, water and bench conditions in consultation with the Geotechnical Engineer in order to optimize pit wall stability and desired rock fragmentation.
Drill and blast cost planning as well as reconciliation, monitoring and improvement of cost analysis, secondary blasting and other blast related issues.
Manage the Mining contractor for the drilling QA/ QC data, digging rates and blast videos to determine areas of further improvement.
Assist in developing forecasts, physical and operating budget estimates.
Provide guidance and training to the Drill and Blast Engineer.
Perform any other related duties based on the exigencies of the Company as assigned by the Supervisor
Skills Required
Minimum qualification (s)

B.Sc in Mining Engineering
Experience working with surface mining contractor
Drill and Blast Design technology
Hold a blasting certificate from MINCOM
Valid driving license
Experience

Five (8) years experience in a similar role
Knowledge

Good working knowledge and experience in drill and blast.
Must have thorough understanding of mining operations, as well as a general understanding of milling operations and mine maintenance.
Demonstrated ability to lead a team and conduct risk assessments.
Track record of implementing continuous improvement projects.
Proficient with Drill and Blast design software, split desktop, BMX fragmenter, Wipfrag, etc.
Well knowledge of Minerals and Mining (Explosives) Regulations, 2012 (LI 2177)
Basic knowledge of mine design software, preferably Surpac, DataMine, MineSched, Whittle, NPVS.
Knowledge and understanding of the Duty of Care Standards, Occupational Health & Safety Regulations 2012 L.I. 2182, and Mining Inspection Act & Regulations.
Understanding of Mining Health & Safety Procedures.
