The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) can grant a limited number of scholarships (6-8) to cover living expenses (service fee is waived for recipients of such grants) for applicants from developing and newly industrialised countries. Confirmation of Employment vs. Letter of Recommendation
A confirmation of employment is usually issued by HR and confirms the dates of employment with the organisation and the tasks. Possibly, but not in all cases, there will be an evaluation of the skills/accomplishments.
A letter of recommendation is a personal assessment from your supervisor that usually includes these three components:
- A paragraph or sentence that explains how the referee knows this person for how long.
- An evaluation of the person and their skills/accomplishments. If possible , specific examples should be offered that illustrate the person’s strengths and qualifications. These examples should be brief but detailed.
- A summary that explains why and to what degree the person is recommended.
- complete the DAAD application form and attach it to the MIDE application form. Don’t forget to date and personally sign the DAAD application form.
- submit a statement of motivation (dated and personally signed) explaining why you are interested in attending a particular postgraduate course with reference to your current employment. Please further describe your development-related motivation and how you intend to make full use of your scholarship and education by taking on social responsibility later in your career.
Important: When applying for more than one postgraduate course (maximum 3 courses), you have to submit one motivation letter only, i.e. the same for each course, explaining why you are applying for these specific courses and why you chose that priority.
You do not have to submit a separate statement of motivation for the MIDE programme. Your statement of motivation for the DAAD scholarship will also serve as the required letter of motivation for the MIDE programme.
- submit proof of at least two years of professional work experience and state your current work situation at the time of application. It is required to submit the following proof: Certificate(s) of employment that include the exact position and period of employment. This/these letter(s) must come on official letterhead, be dated and signed as well as carry a stamp. Letters of appointment, work contracts, pay slips etc. are not accepted as proof of employment.
- a letter of reference from the employer(s), ideally guaranteeing re-employment after completion of the postgraduate course in Germany. This/these letter(s) must come on official letterhead, have a current date and be signed as well as carry a stamp.
If applying to more than one course, please list courses in order of priority in the DAAD application forms and do not change these priorities in the respective application!
Academic reference letters are not required for the scholarship application anymore. Please ignore this section in the MIDE application form.
What are the selection criteria for the DAAD scholarship?
The ideal scholarship holder
- Works either for a public authority or a state or private company in a developing country and,as such, is engaged in the planning and execution of directives and projects with emphasis on development policies having a bearing on technological, economic or social areas. Scholarship applications from lecturers and researchers at universities are subordinated to applications from practioners in the development field.
- Holds a Bachelor’s degree (normally four years) in a related subject
- Has completed an academic degree with far above average results (upper third) and at least
- Two years of related professional experience after the first degree (bachelor)
- His/her academic degrees are not older than six years.
Selection criteria and procedures for DAAD scholarship recipients ensure that:
- priority target candidates have proven development-related motivation and can be expected to make full use of their scholarship and education by taking on social responsibility later in their careers, acting as agents of change who stimulate and support development in their personal and professional surroundings (motivation, commitment to development) in their home countries.
- the candidates have the professional and academic qualifications necessary to ensure suc-cessful completion of the degree programme in Germany (final scores on previous academic examinations, language skills),
- women and candidates from disadvantaged groups who meet the required academic and professional standards and show proven commitment to development-related issues are especially targeted for programme admission.
What does the DAAD scholarship cover?
- Living expenses (17 months): 850,00 €/month
- Study and research subsidy
- A subsidy for travel expenses (incl. insurance for accident & personal liability) to Germany and back home after the completion of the programme
- Health insurance
- Preparatory German Language Course (February/ March).
Are there other sources of funding?
Competition for the DAAD scholarship is very intense, we receive about 250 applications for only 6-8 scholarships that can be granted.
Applicants are thus adviced to also look into other sources of funding, i.e. the employer, the goverment of the home country and other funding organistions. You do have to apply for these on your own, MIDE cannot assist you. A good starting point to search for scholarships is the scholarship databaseprovided by the DAAD.
Please note that HTW Berlin does not offer scholarships for students.
GDAI – PhD scholarships
The Centre of African Studies offers 2 PhD scholarships to African nationals as part of the Governance for Development in Africa Initiative funded by the Mo Ibrahim Foundation.
Applications are invited for PhD studentships focused on the area of state capacities, governance and bureaucracy for development. This may include projects designed to understand public sector governance capabilities, political settlements, state business relations, the governance of state owned enterprises, the governance of development policy design and implementation, and so on. But applications must focus on the public sector/state/civil service, on governance, and on development.
In order to be considered for funding, applicants must first secure an UNCONDITIONAL OFFER for the PhD by applying directly to the SOAS Doctoral School.
The deadline for submission of application is 31st March 2021.
NOTE: By 31st of March you must have an Unconditional offer for PhD in order to be considered for funding. Note that it takes 8 weeks to receive an offer of admission for PhD, therefore to apply for the PhD at least or before January 2021.
The eligible PhD are only those within the following departments:
- Development Studies
- International Relations/Politics
- CISD (Centre for International Studies and Diplomacy)
- DEFIMS (Department for Financial and Management Studies )
- Distance Learning: CEFIMS(Centre for Financial and Management Studies), DEFIMS
Once the place is secured, the applicants can apply for the scholarship. Candidates will be assessed on academic merit by a panel consisting of SOAS academic members. The assessment of your application will be based on the information in your scholarship application. Please provide the following documents:
- a copy of the unconditional offer received from SOAS admissions office
- CV (please include your email address)
- 2 pages max statement outlining knowledge and interest in governance-related issues
- Your research proposal (as sent to the SOAS Admissions Office)
- one academic reference (to be sent directly by referee to firstname.lastname@example.org)
Please note that CAS reserves the right not to award scholarships and will only award them where there are applicants judged to meet sufficiently high academic standards and with demonstrable interests in fields relevant to the objectives of the GDAI.

Harry Frank Guggenheim Foundation Support for Postdoctoral Research
In addition to the foundation’s program of support for postdoctoral research, ten or more dissertation fellowships are awarded each year to graduate students who would complete the writing of a dissertation within the award year.
These fellowships of $20,000 each are designed to contribute to the support of the doctoral candidate to enable him or her to complete the thesis in a timely manner and are only appropriate for students approaching the final year of their Ph.D. work.
This fellowship is not for support of doctoral research. Applications are evaluated in comparison with each other and not in competition with the postdoctoral research grant proposals. Applicants may be citizens of any country and studying at colleges or universities in any country.
Questions that interest the foundation concern violence and aggression in relation to social change, intergroup conflict, war, terrorism, crime, and family relationships, among other subjects. Dissertations with no relevance to understanding human violence and aggression will not be supported. Priority will also be given to areas and methodologies not receiving adequate attention and support from other funding sources.
These grants are made to Ph.D. candidates who are entering the dissertation stage of graduate school. Usually, this means that fieldwork or other research is complete and writing has begun. If analysis and writing are not far enough along for an applicant to be confident that he will complete the dissertation within the year, he should not apply, as the application will not be competitive with those that comply with this timetable. In some disciplines, particularly experimental fields, research and writing can reasonably be expected to be completed within the same year, and in those cases it is appropriate to apply.
Applications for dissertation fellowships must be received by February 1, for a decision in June. Applications are reviewed during the spring and final decisions are made by the Board of Directors at its meeting in June. Applicants will be informed promptly by e-mail as well as letter of the Board’s decision. Awards ordinarily commence on September 1, but other starting dates (after July 1) may be requested if the nature of the project makes this appropriate.
Recipients of the dissertation fellowship must submit a copy of the dissertation, approved and accepted by their institution, within six months after the end of the award year. Any papers, books, articles, or other publications based on the research should also be sent to the foundation.
Applications are submitted online–the application will be available beginning October 1st. (However, we will still accept a mailed application using our previous application method, a printable PDF form, provided it arrives at the foundation’s office no later than February 1, or the following Monday if February 1 falls on a weekend.) - Candidates may be required to undergo a written/oral examination after pre- selection.
- Candidates for the Master in Conference Interpreting and Translation programmes are required to have excellent knowledge of at least two of the African Union’s official languages (Arabic, English, French and Portuguese).
